"Select an option" does not automatically go away when user starts typing

In AP when you go into a list field, "Select an option" does not automatically go away when you put your cursor in/start typing. You actually have to erase "Select an option" which is counterintuitive and a huge hassle - it causes the wrong search and returns no results.

Time consuming & it should just not function this way.

Yes you have to erase "select an option" and start typing to search.

"Select an option" should disappear once you put your cursor into the field or start typing.
